Uber has partnered with Safaricom PLC, one of Kenya's leading telecommunications companies, to provide free mobile data to app users. This will enable easier downloads and usage of the Uber and Uber Eats apps for drivers, delivery partners, riders, consumers, and merchants across the country.
Uber will cover the cost of the free data, addressing one of the barriers to accessing mobility products like Uber Boda, as identified in an Uber survey.
The partnership aims to bridge the digital divide in Kenya, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas, where internet access remains a challenge. By providing free data, especially to the youth, Uber and Safaricom seek to enhance access to reliable, affordable, and safer mobility options, aligning with the Kenya National Digital Masterplan 2022-2032's goal of deepening ICT access for accelerated economic growth
Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa C.B.S highlighted the collaboration as part of their goal to provide customers with innovative solutions that allow them to access vital services even without data bundles or airtime.
